Some people own a tiny house, but it’s a guest house. Other people have two tiny houses or use a tiny house as a vacation home. We do live in our tiny house full time, but, as I like to put it, we have really good neighbors. We live on Alex’s parents’ property. We share the shed, and Alex has an Aquaponics system in their garage that he built and maintains. But all of our daily activities- sleeping, eating, cooking, bathroom- take place in our tiny house.
Alex’s parents have a few bins of our stuff at their house, as well as some of my nicer clothes. Before we got our water hooked up, we filled up buckets of water at their house and used their shower. We do our laundry at their house. We borrow/buy things sometimes if we need them instead of buying a whole container of something that will take up too much room in the tiny house. Last week I used their vacuum to put our comforter in a space saver bag and took 1/4 cup of bran flakes that I needed for a recipe.
Yet, we’re comfortable enough with living tiny that if we lived in a stranger’s yard, we would be fine. We would do our laundry at the laundromat or buy a small handheld washer. I enjoy running water, but if we didn’t, we could get a big holding tank for our water and store it under the sink.
We also both work outside of the home. I am a teacher, and Alex works for his family’s business. Some people work from home while they life in a tiny house. While that would probably work for a single person, I think Alex and I would have a hard time if we were both trying to work from home.
So, yes, we do live full time in 144 square feet.
